New Directions in Modern German History

Graphic Design, Printed Media. For the University of Rochester Humanities Center and Department of German Studies.
Made in Spring 2025.

precis: This two-day conference (April 25-26) will bring together scholars from the greater New York region and beyond to present and discuss new research in modern German history. Two public keynote lectures will highlight particularly innovative methodologies and topics: Anne Berg (University of Pennsylvania) will present her new material history of trash and recycling in the Nazi Empire, while Samuel Clowes Huneke (George Mason University) will present his forthcoming book on the history of queer women’s experiences in the Third Reich. Other sessions will workshop research in progress on topics including intellectual and conceptual history, German-Jewish history and thought, Holocaust studies, and labor and automation in modern Germany, among other topics. design: I worked off of the title of the conference and a loaded interpretation of “modern”. The font, DIN 1451, has been used on road signs in Germany since the 1930s, so is fitting here.

an unused version, featuring actual German road signs that I screenshotted off of Google Maps
